This complete course of movement lessons will go through all the muscular systems of the body in an intentional sequence and help the participant learn to undo patterns of unhelpful tension

Our bodies are a curious mix of helpful and unhelpful tension. Helpful tension, tensegrity - the means by which we can stay upright, lift our heads, move our limbs and so on; and unhelpful tensions which may develop along the way as life events impact on us.
As we navigate our way through life’s challenges, we can easily end up with different muscular tensions which may become habitual These can lead to postural problems, discomfort, distorted breathing habits and whole host of other effects.
The principle behind Somatics is that these patterns of unhelpful tension are functional problems rather than structural and as such, can be solved by re-educating the brain and the nervous system. Thomas Hanna viewed these problems as a form of memory loss, which he called Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA). These movement exercises are a way of reminding the body how to move certain muscles in the body, muscles which may have become locked into habitual contraction in response to life’s challenges.
These Somatic exercise sequences are a way for the us to relearn how to release habitual contractions, thus enabling us to regain normal functioning and a sense of bodily well-being.
My personal experience with Somatic movement
My personal experience of the somatic movement lessons has been profound. I’ve noticed a general softening of unhelpful tensions in the body and at the same time, a sense of strengthening and resilience. My capacity to rest into relaxation has increased, as well as my capacity to step into action. It has helped me to have a direct experience of how I hold patterns of unhelpful tension in the body, and how to let them go, the result of this is having a direct effect on my embodied experience of being me, e.g noticing how I hold my shoulders in a challenging conversation, what I do with my posture when I feel unsure etc etc and in changing those habitual postures and body responses, my habitual emotional/mental responses are also changing. I’m experiencing a decrease in anxiety, a sense of quiet peace in myself, an increased capacity to stay kind to myself and true to myself.
